How can I get an almost 5 year old into bed?

SoI nanny and the girl HATES sleeping, she throws a fit everytime its her bedtime. Her bedtime is 7:30 and we start getting ready at 7:00. She says she not tired and I will literally have to drag her to bed. We will read and pray before bed but she comes out of her room or will sit there laying awake. I am sick of yelling an having her being restricted from things because she will not listen!!

Maybe try making her bedtime a little later?

It could just be that she really isn't tired at 7:30... what time does she wake up, and does she take naps?

Reply:At 5 years old, you don't negotiate or discuss.

Get her to bed, and let her sit there laying awake for the whole night. Don't yell or discuss at all. Read, pray, good night and walk away.

Let her make as much noise as she likes - you are done.

It may take one or tow nights before she realizes you are not getting into that cycle with her anymore, and she'll just stop and you'll have your peace.

Reply:Well it might be mean, but my husband and I have a resident 'monster' that comes to 'visit' my children if they don't go to sleep. Said 'monster' will bang on the walls, make loud noises on the floor etc and we always say things oh no what's that. It's that monster that carries away little boys who don't go to sleep. They usually go to sleep shortly thereafter. Also ignoring them seems to help. If you see her out of bed, ignore her. Carry her back to bed once or twice turn out her light and go about your business. The monster tactic works well for us. Mean or not. And I will admit 7:30 does seem kind of early for a 5 year old. My boys are 7 and 4 and they go to bed at 9.
